Summer 2009: Accessible beaches in Barcelona
All the beaches in the city of Barcelona are accessible: they have adapted public transportation, reserved parking places with accessible itineraries to the beach sand, signalling and visual information, adapted toilets and showers, and wooden walkways up to the water.
In two of these beaches there’s a swimmers supporting, given with the cooperation of Red Cross volunteers. It helps people with reduced mobility get in and out of the water and enjoy the sea.
This initiative is spreading to most cities in the Spanish coast, like the City of Palma de Mallorca (that holds the Flag of Towns and Cities for All 2008), since 5 of its 8 beaches are already accessible, and their commitment is to make them all accessible to guarantee everyone can enjoy them, including people with special needs.
